| By looking at the letters on the back of the strips, they can be separated into two groups of ten, one with letters oriented horizontally, and one with letters oriented vertically. |

| The next step is to weave the horizontal the vertical strips together, making a 10 x 10 grid. Guiding the construction of the weave is the need to make a path that leads from "BIRTH" (upper left corner) to "DEATH" (lower right corner). Helpful in this regard is recognition of certain constraints on the maze format: paths cannot go off the edge of the weave and dead-ends will always end in the middle of a square.
